Why Cost Comparisons Are Hard
Published IVF prices vary widely because clinics package services differently. Two quotes can describe very different scopes of care. A meaningful comparison requires identifying exactly what is — and isn't — included.
Common Components of an IVF Quote
- Base cycle — monitoring, egg retrieval, lab fertilization, and one embryo transfer.
- Medications — typically billed separately; cost depends on protocol and dose.
- ICSI — intracytoplasmic sperm injection, often an add-on for male-factor cases.
- Anesthesia — for the retrieval procedure.
- Embryo culture extensions — e.g., culture to blastocyst stage.
- PGT-A / genetic testing — biopsy and laboratory fees, plus per-embryo testing.
- Cryopreservation — vitrification and initial storage period.
- Frozen embryo transfer — subsequent transfers from stored embryos.
- Donor programs — egg, sperm, or embryo donation are priced separately.
Travel and Indirect Costs
- Round-trip transportation for monitoring and procedure travel.
- Lodging during stimulation, retrieval recovery, and (if applicable) fresh transfer.
- Local monitoring fees if a portion of monitoring is performed in your home country.
- Time away from work and any caregiver coordination.
What Cost Does Not Tell You
Lower price does not imply lower quality, and higher price does not guarantee better outcomes. The relevant clinical questions are about evaluation thoroughness, lab quality, protocol individualization, and physician experience — not price alone.
Insurance and Financing
Many international patients pay out-of-pocket. Some insurance plans reimburse a portion of international fertility treatment; this varies widely. Confirm coverage with your insurer in writing before treatment. Some clinics offer multi-cycle financial packages — review terms carefully.
Questions to Ask About Cost
- What exactly is included in the base price?
- Which add-ons would my situation likely require?
- How are medications billed, and what is a realistic dose range for my profile?
- What happens financially if a cycle is cancelled or converted (e.g., to IUI or freeze-all)?
- What are the storage fees beyond the first year?
- Are there package or multi-cycle options, and what are their refund terms?
Outcome Reminder
Cost is one factor in choosing a provider. Outcomes are not guaranteed, and "cheaper" cycles do not always represent better overall value if quality, evaluation, or lab standards differ.
